‘Our threads are tangled’ 2026
Collaborative Show at Unassigned Gallery
This collaborative exhibition explores the entanglements of culture and the symbiotic nature of friendship through shared making. As long-time collaborators, Imogen and Joanna delve into the relational dynamics of their creative practices, emphasising the generative potential of working together. Their practices create an environment where threads of the personal, the ancestral, and the psychological tangle and dissolve.
Drawing from memory and disremembered sites, the artists respond to the colours, textures, tastes, and scents of their roots. While these influences shape their practices individually, collaboration deepens their engagement with it. Bringing forth new ways of seeing and feeling, where place, connection, and presence continually shift and reconfigure.
Combining Joanna’s figurative painterly language with Imogen’s ambiguous expanded painting and textile-based sculptures, the resulting body of work reveals overlapping threads of experience, expression, and response. The artists engage in a process of constructing and untangling representations of place as they relate to their interior and exterior worlds. This collaborative body of work will culminate into layering their contributions onto canvas and fabric - painting directly onto material, and assembling fragments into new, hybrid forms of connection.
